Health and Wellness

The key to longevity is our health. We can be financially solid, mentally sharp, and spiritually fulfilled but without health and wellness, the circle of holistic aging will be incomplete. Research has shown that those individuals who make health and wellness a daily priority, see notable increases in life span and the quality of their lives. What are the factors that make up balanced health and wellness? Habits! Those daily routines we build around diet, nutrition, weight, exercise, sleep, chronic disease, medication management, and safety. Many of us developed habits during our lives that revolved around raising a family, hectic work schedules, stressful jobs, and socializing that was unhealthy. We followed diets that weren’t nutritionally sound, we ate on the run, consumed empty calories, overindulged, lacked proper exercise, and were sleep-deprived. In our daily lives, our stress levels were high, our emphasis was on our jobs and raising our families and our balance constantly shifted in and out of wellness. We carry many of those habits into aging and find ourselves overweight, fatigued, our bodies with limited mobility, and the development of chronic diseases.

I understand that genetics, environment, culture, and income directly affect our health and wellness choices. But I also believe that healthy habits are available to everyone regardless of these factors. You don’t need to follow expensive diet programs, belong to a gym, buy high-priced ingredients, or live in a quiet community to get proper sleep. I am a single mother of 3 children, money was never plentiful. I entered my 60s overweight, with poor eating habits, arthritic joints, suffering from insomnia, and a limited exercise regimen. I was the poster child for how NOT to age holistically!

I quickly learned that the unhealthy habits I had developed during the first two-thirds of my life would not transition into high-quality aging. I needed to change. I researched and experimented with diet and nutrition. I learned what foods to avoid that quickly put on weight, adopted a nutrition-based diet, and found a daily eating schedule that helped me to lose 50 pounds. I realized that both weight loss and maintenance would not happen without exercise. After trying a long list of options, I fell in love with hiking, and on the days when that is not possible, I simply walk.  I have maintained my weight loss for over 3 years. Along with helping maintain a healthy weight, a bonus of exercise and diet has been an improvement in both my arthritis and my sleep. As my health improved and my aging progressed I furthered my knowledge about medications and over-the-counter medicines commonly used as we age. I have successfully incorporated holistic skincare, haircare, and accompanying supplements that have worked to further improve my health and wellness.

Change is the cornerstone of success.  There are 4 keys to that formula, attitude, personal accountability, perseverance, and habit.
