Spirituality is a force that is bigger than oneself. It provides guidance, purpose, and meaning to many who follow or believe the tenets of an organization, movement, or philosophy. It can provide a community of families, groups, or members of like-minded individuals who connect through the same belief system.  Research shows that spiritual practice is associated with better health, wellness, and mental well-being.  To many who practice, calmness or peace comes from within and gives a sense of direction.

Until about 10 years ago, I will admit that spirituality was not a big part of my adult years. I attended religious schools throughout my primary and high school years but lost that connection into adulthood. As I navigated life, I became increasingly aware of my need to understand others, myself, and the world.  I began reflecting on my past religious teachings, those I  learned in my youth, and how that knowledge impacted my life. I had a grasp of morals and the difference between right and wrong but beyond that, I had no concrete direction in emotions, thoughts, and feelings.

I looked around at my friends and acquaintances who were involved in local communities of faith and determined that I had a void in my life. I was healthy, active, and surrounded by family and friends, but needed answers to thoughts, feelings, and emotions that had plagued me for years.

I spent several years exploring different religious beliefs and philosophies. I finally landed on one whose tenets align with myself and my needs. My practice provides me with a path to follow and a structure for understanding others, myself, and the world. Whenever I am mired in negativity, experience emotions I don’t understand, or feel lost, I turn to that practice for answers. My faith provides a road to calmness, clarity, and refuge. I have found a community of like-minded individuals to share my path and provide me with kinship.

Contemplative practices like meditation, praying, yoga, and journaling are all spiritual practices. The act of looking inward can increase your compassion, empathy, and clarity.  Practicing spirituality can help deal with difficult emotions, stress, and mental struggles, as well as having health benefits.  Holistic aging is all about balance. Finding that equilibrium is part of the journey. Spirituality can offer purpose and meaning which can lead to healthier choices in our behaviors with ourselves and others.  We can explore the many faces of spirituality together.
